Bait?
What would you use for channels on the Ole Miss?
Fresh Chicken livers or Shrimp?
Would you fish the main channel or the flat that runs along the main channel for cats in the afternoon /evening?
thanks -

For Channel Cats I like fresh cut sucker or Pan fish when legal. I have had luck on livers but prefer beef liver, it last longer and holds better than chicken liver.
I have never tried shrimp, guess I will eat them first It is always good to throw a variety to see what is getting hit!
With the low flow I like the main channel near wingdams and sand flats. Start in the channel during the day. I like to even drift the edge slow and down river, hold on because they slam hard on a drift. Come night move on top of sand. You will find feeding cats in 5-10fow at night. Also at night watch the wingdams for a lot of bait fish being chased. This is a dead give away there are cats around

Finding fishable current while fishing from shore is a the real challenge.
I have been getting takes while fishing fresh chicken livers off a sand beach, that sometimes features an eddy, and casting to the edge of the main channel. I have yet to hook up with a cat.
The other anglers fishing this beach have been using fresh shrimp and clams successfully with the same presentation.

Guess I would be clamming and using shrimp then.
We found that the Channels have moved a littler deeper while drifting with fresh cut bait last night.
The first picture is a 15lb channel cat, the second came in at 13lbs, the third was an averange Channel for the night wieghiing in at 8 plus some change!

if you catch any rough fish while fishing for the cats, bring along a knife and make up some cut baits. just make chunks of flesh in 2 x 2 inch pieces of fish (i use the belly). they will produce the bigger channels, but perhaps not the numbers. i know you said you are just looking to get into them period, but if you have not got any and those around you are catching some, switch it up a bit. Sonnys stink bait will also get you numbers but not so much size. use one of the ribbed plastic catfish bait holders, but hang on to your rod (apollo lost his last weekend to a fish...his pole now resides on the bottom of the old miss.)

I broke the skunk today.
We took channels on cut suckers and chicken livers fishing the outside edge of the main channel.

The skunk breaker.
Not as great as the one I got a few years back.
Still searching for Catifsh Hunter, of whom I handled a few years back after a brief stint of her pulling the boat them me pulling her with the boat.

that is a nice looking cat! What about crawdad's for bait? I know I have cleaned a few with crawdad's in the stomachs.
One thing to remember when using chicken livers, it is illegal to use a treble hook in MN, unless you have a spinner on the line.
